I have a confession to make: I’m a tad tired of candy.
It’s no one’s fault but my own; I’m the idiot who decided to write a blog with friends so we could get the sweets for free. I’m still eating candy, just not as much.
OH THAT’S SUCH A LIE. I eat a shit TON of candy still! I’m just not writing as many blog posts lately because I’m lazy!
Phew. Got that off my chest.
Now let’s jump into these draft beer Jelly Belly’s, shall we?
The wonderful people at Jelly Belly, who make by far the best tasting jelly beans anywhere in the world, sent us some of the new beans (as they are wont to do, even without us Gurus asking for them). These things look similar to the another newly released line, with spreckled luminescence around the outside.
I think the kids these days stare at tablets and screens so much, if something doesn’t twinkle, they won’t spend their allowance on it. So Jelly Belly and other confectioneers make everything glow and shiny and bright.
The color, as you can see, is champagne-y light brown lager. The consistency is unlike other Jelly Belly’s – not very chewy. Instead, they are soft, so they dissolved in my mouth quicker than other beans. Perhaps it’s that they are so new, they haven’t been laying around long enough to firm up with age. I personally like my candy older, since I like it chewier.
I wouldn’t say that I didn’t like these beans, but I Do think the flavor is a miss. To me, it tastes like honey going in, and then as I swallowed, I got only a hint of beer. They don’t smell like beer either, so that doesn’t help its cause. They smell like a soap that has gone old. The honey taste is OK, but I’m not a huge fan of honey as a flavor.
One thing to note is that the Jelly Belly people suggested we try the draft beer beans with others, like lemon line and red apple. This was indeed the way to go. I tasted the beer flavor way more going this route. And plus I got to try red apple, which is awesome, and tastes just like red apples! With the beer beans it was like a cider going down.
So I say do yourself a favor, go out and try some draft beer beans WITHt a few flavors like peach, lemon lime, and tabasco (which rocks) and eat these as part of a Jelly Belly recipe – they are well worth it that way.
Three stars on this? wwwttttffffff????? hehehehe. Ok, I support the idea of mixing the jelly beer with other jellies. Alone, this jelly is quite below the level expected for jelly beans. Don’t you think? 😉
Jelly Belly gets 2 stars just for trying every time. The 3rd star means it’s something you should try but not a ton to love. I agree overall – these things aren’t super, but they’re … interesting.
