Summer Roll

When it's summer in Australia, what time is it "here"?

I read an article about Australian candy before my braj went there recently, and one of the first candies I discovered was this “Summer Roll”.

When I see coconut, or anything that looks like it, I get interested. I wasn’t however, expecting him to bring one of them home for me. He’s ayeet!

My. Sweet. Lord. Locks freaking delish. Let’s check out what’s inside.

Surprising. I’m not sure what I expected (maybe chocolate, caramel, and more coconut?), but it sure wasn’t an almost solid nougat center. Here’s where things get really fun. I took a bite, and the hard nougat cracked, and I chewed away. It was decent, a nougaty, slightly coconut laced taste. I was stymied as to why it’s called a summer roll, because the experience didn’t feel very summery. I have no idea why, but it didn’t.

Flash forward to a few days later, when I’m sitting down to write this review. As I always try to do before writing, I tried the candy again. It had been sitting around in my office at work, which is kept at balmy 71-72 degrees. And guess what? The nougat was soft baby, yeah! And then I got the summer thing. When it’s warm out, this candy bar is a chewy, easy to eat good times machine. Still tasty when it’s cold, but the hard nougat crunchy thing doesn’t really work as well to bring out the combination of flavors.

Summer roll.

I like this thing. Would I buy it again? Probably not. My favorite way to eat coconut in candy is either simple classic style Mounds/Almond Joy, or even more old school in the 3 flavor coconut bar, or even OLDER via those weird Chick-O-Stick thingies. Crikey, I’m old. But the point is that I want the coconut to be the star, front and center, and in these Aussie Summer Rolls, it’s more about the nougat.

And no one’s gonna lay down on the freeway for nougat, are they?

Having said that, here’s link for an actual metric shitton of them!

Glad to hear they have candy in Australia. 2 stars just for that.

Glad you ‘liked’ them. I wonder if there’s anything to the fact that their summer is our winter…December, January, etc.
