I’m a sports fan in the U.S., which means I see a lot of television ads. And I’m usually stuck watching them because I don’t watch recorded sports.
Usually. USUALLY I don’t. OccASIONally I will like if I miss a football game and I want to see the highlights when my favorite team wins. But this isn’t the point.
The point is, watching sports in the U.S. means watching ads. And watching the Super Bowl especially means watching ads, since marketing departments across industries spend their entire year’s budget on 30 second spots to reach the largest television audience — of all time.
Yeah. More people watched the 2024 Super Bowl than any other TV program ever in the U.S.
And my favorite team lost. I’m still upset about it. I’m actually depressed. Don’t talk to me. Don’t try to cheer me up.
ANYway … For said Super Bowl 2024, Reese’s introduced the new Reese’s Caramel Big Cup. And I saw a ton of ads for it. You likely did. And now I’m finally going to f(*&ing review it.
TL;DR It’s good. Try it. You’ll Like it. It won’t replace the OG though. No way.
We Need the Caramel to be on Par with the Nut Butter
We can debate until the cows come home if the peanut butter in the Reese’s is “top tier.” I personally like it. For one, it’s salty, for two, it’s not overly sweet. For three, they were the first. And even when I have more natural peanut butter cups candy, I still tend to prefer Reese’s. And this is because of the peanut butter. Not because of the chocolate.
So, if you’re going to go all in and add another big ingredient, I’d expect you make it very distinctively different (like they did with pretzels) — and up the Cup experience.
That’s not what you get with this caramel though. It isn’t luscious and creamy (don’t let the package fool ya), and you might not even know it was in there at first when you bite in.
The caramel is actually a layer underneath another thin layer of chocolate. If the caramel was a tad harder, and not essentially the same texture as the chocolate, it would make for a more interesting take on the usually very melty Cup.
And perhaps most importantly for all, the flavor is your average Big Candy Maker caramel.
Worth a Bite
Even though I haven’t been hyping the new Cups, I still say go out and partake. For one, you may not agree with me. And then you can comment about how lame I am. But also, these feel slightly novel. Meaning: Who knows how long they’ll be available.
But they’re here now. And literally right her right now.
