As much candy as I eat, I eat WAY more spicy foods. Moreso, I slather non-spicy foods with hot sauce as a rule. Eggs, chicken, stir fry, sausages, veggies, I don’t care-it gets hot sauce. I started my journey a few decades ago with Tobasco, and now have a stable of bitch bottles that I rotate through. One kind though, always has a prominent place in my fridge, and that’s Sriracha. Maybe you know it as “Rooster Sauce”, as Whitey calls it?
Ahh, yes. It’s the shit. The best. Spicy, salty, garlic-y, complex, with just a hint of sweetness. Spicy, but not too hot-even Jonny Guru Jr. eats it now, and he’s 7, so sac up.
When I heard that Lollyphile.com had made a Sriracha lollipop…well, I had to have. Immediamente.
Oh yeah. I couldn’t WAIT to try this out, as I imagined exactly how it would taste: just like Sriracha, but way heavier on the sweet side.
Look! You can see the little flecks of goodness! Although what goodness exactly I’m not sure, as Sriracha has a pretty smooth consistency.
I tried one, and had a not so great reaction to it, so i sat on it (not literally) for a few more days and then tried again. The good news his that I think it’s pretty tasty-but I don’t think it tastes like Sriracha. At all.
I’m sure it’s made with tons of it, but the flavor doesn’t come through for me. What I taste is a pretty sweet lollipop with a pretty fierce (me likey) spicy surge at the finish. The issue is that the pop doesn’t really taste like anything to me-just sweet. I wanted garlic and salt, but there’s none to be found. Imagine if you will, a lollipop flavored as “sugar” with a spicy kick to it, and what you’d get is this.
I feel awful that I didn’t love this, cause I freakin’ LOVE Sriracha sauce, as outlined above. Maybe you guys will fare better with this, or find flavor notes that I didn’t. What I do love though is the fine folks at Lollyphile being committed to making such insanely fringe lolly flavors. Maybe your plan should be to hit up their site (you gotta check out some of their flavors. Cactus fruit? Check. Horchata? yep. Strawberry Basil Mojito? Got it!) and get a grab bag of different flavors. While you’re there, if you’re a spicy freak, maybe pick up a Sriracha pop-but don’t expect it to taste like the sauce.
I can understand them not making it taste truly sauce-like, as I bet most people would freak out if there were garlic and salt notes, but for me…that’s what I was looking for.
Spice on. Click the link below to grab some and decide for yourselves.
You had me at “the cock has spoken”. But really? I’m starting to think maybe I can design candy…
Actually, me too. Why haven’t we made beer candy yet? I could sell the hell out of that
So I shouldn’t melt this down and put on my chow mein
What’s the point of a Sriracha lollipop that tastes good but nothing like Sriracha? Stupid.
